Careers Education and Guidance – the facts
The following definitions help to clarify what Careers Education and Guidance is:
Careers education helps young people develop the knowledge and skills they need to make successful choices, manage transitions in learning and move into work.
Careers guidance enables young people to use the knowledge and skills they develop to make the decisions about learning and work that are right for them.
Careers education and careers guidance are both related and depend on each other for their effectiveness and so there is a need for schools, colleges, training providers and Connexions Personal Advisers to work closely with young people to help them make smooth transitions into education, training or employment.
Provision of careers information to support careers education and guidance activities is also a vital component e.g printed or ICT based services and materials on learning and work, financial support, labour market information etc.
Requirements for Careers Education and Guidance provision
All maintained schools (including special schools and Pupil Referral Units) have a statutory duty to provide a planned careers education programme in the curriculum for all pupils in Years 7-11.
As of September 2004, the DfES extended the duty on schools to deliver a curriculum-based programme of careers education down to Years 7 & 8 to enable young people to develop career management skills earlier, so they are better prepared to take their first set of decisions during Year 9 (Key Stage 4 options). This means that for the first time careers education becomes part of the statutory curriculum at Key Stage 3 in secondary and middle schools. As a result, the DfES have produced a document to help middle schools meet the requirement which can be downloaded from here.
DfES National Framework for Careers Education and Guidance 11-19
There is no prescribed programme of study for careers education but the DfES has published a national non-statutory framework for careers education and guidance 11-19 which can be downloaded from here or ordered from DfES by phoning 0845 602 2260 Ref: DfES/0163/2003.
The National Careers Education and Guidance Framework contains recommended learning outcomes for careers education in Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 and post-16, together with examples of curriculum content linked to the suggested outcomes. DfES recommend that schools, colleges and training providers base their careers education provision on the learning outcomes contained in the Framework. There is also useful mapping with Citizenship and PSHE. Sample schemes of work based on the Framework, as well as exemplar lesson plans have been produced by the Careers Education Support Programme (CESP) and these materials can be found on the following website www.cegnet.co.uk.
