Curriculum Development

Types of Careers Education and Guidance provision, The Real Game Series, Resources for Careers Education and Guidance, Further Information / Advice on CEG Curriculum Development

Since September 2004 the Key Stage 4 curriculum has been revised to give greater flexibility and choice, with fewer compulsory subjects and work-related learning being introduced for all.

It is important that schools maintain the statutory entitlement to Careers Education and Guidance throughout Key Stage 4 for all students, including those on work-related learning programmes or other individually tailored curricula, who spend some of their time on placements outside school. As the curriculum is becoming more flexible and more choices are available to young people this implies an increased need for easily accessible advice and guidance for all, from careers teachers and guidance professionals, thus a higher profile for this area of provision.

Types of Careers Education and Guidance provision

A variety of approaches are currently used by schools and colleges to teach careers education, including the following:

 bullet pointSpecialist careers lessons
bullet pointCareers activities in tutorial and enrichment programmes
bullet pointCareers units in PSHE and Citizenship programmes
bullet pointCareers activities in subject lessons
bullet pointCareers activities in vocational and specialist courses
bullet pointCareers activities in the Connexions Resource Centre
bullet pointSpecial events and extra-curricular activities (e.g Careers Fair, Options Evenings, work experience etc)
 bullet pointDrop-in sessions

Schemes of work for careers education in Year 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and post-16 are available on the following website: www.cegnet.co.uk.

The following tools are available to help curriculum planning for CEG:

The Real Game SeriesReal Game Logo

A number of schools use the Real Game series to support the Citizenship curriculum and help young people develop real life skills. The Make It Real Game (for Years 6 and 7) provides teachers with a versatile and easy to use resource that can be used in a variety of curriculum areas.

The Real Game (for Years 8 & 9) promotes effective learning in the areas of Careers, Citizenship and PSHE and also provides many opportunities for links to other curriculum areas and between the school and the wider community. The Real Game is now available as an interactive web-based version and so can be played on-line using an interactive whiteboard, a projector or in an ICT suite. It can also be played off-line using a CD ROM; or traditionally using an overhead projector. e-Learning Credits can be used to purchase the electronic version of the Real Game www.curriculumonline.gov.uk

The Be Real Game (for Years 10 and 11) is designed to support teachers and schools in responding to the new requirements for the non-academic elements of the curriculum, including Careers, PSHE and Citizenship. Further information on the Real Game series can be obtained from EBP on 01278 726870
