A young person can be employed full time from the date they leave school at the end of year 11. Their school leaving date is the last Friday in June. Part time – whilst at school
The age that a child can start work is 13 years old, however -
they can only work part time there are restrictions on what they can and cannot do any work they do must not interfere with, or affect their school work or attendance at school they have to a work permit (this is a legal requirement)
Applying for a work permit Applications for a work permit are made through Somerset Direct on: Tel - 0845 3459122
They will:
ask questions about the job the young person wants to do contact the employer or parent/guardian to get more information to make sure that the young person will be working in a safe and healthy environment and within the law about the number of working hours.
If the job is within the stated law, an employment certificate is sent to the child's parent/guardian and a copy to the employer and school.
