Application Forms

For every job advertised there are generally dozens, maybe hundreds of applicants. Filling in an application form is therefore very important. From an application form an employer can tell that you:

bullet pointtake care in the presentation of your work
 bullet pointcan follow instructions
bullet pointhave the skills to match the job
bullet pointpossess qualifications and work experience.

There are basic rules to follow when completing an application form:

bullet pointAlways make a photocopy of the original blank form to practice on.
bullet pointBefore you set pen to paper read through the form carefully to ensure you have understood the instructions for completing it.
bullet pointFollow all instructions. For example “complete the form in black ink”.
bullet pointAllow plenty of time to complete the form. If you rush you are likely to make mistakes.
bullet pointMake sure that you have all the details of your qualifications, achievements and other relevant information to hand before you start.
bullet pointEnsure your handwriting is clear and easy to read.
bullet pointKeep the form in good condition. Coffee rings and smudge marks on the form do not create a good impression!
bullet pointAnswer all the questions. If any do not apply to you, write "not applicable" or "N/A" in the space.
bullet pointAsk someone to check your completed form for you
bullet pointTake a photocopy of the completed form so that you can refer to it when preparing for an interview.

TIPS

Always send a covering letter with your application form. This will give you the opportunity to highlight your particular selling points and to provide extra information in support of your application. It also conveys your enthusiasm and motivation for the job.
