The Interview

At the interview

bullet pointIf at the start, or the end of your interview, your interviewer offers you their hand it is expected you will shake it with your right hand.
bullet pointIt is important to make eye contact with interviewers during the interview (but do not stare!).
bullet pointListen carefully to the questions you are asked and don't rush your answers.
bullet pointIf you don't understand a question, tell the interviewer. They may rephrase it, or explain in more detail what they want.
bullet pointDon't waffle. Try to keep your answers clear and to the point.
bullet pointBe aware of your body language. Watch out for clenched fists and crossed arms, a sign that you are being defensive.
 bullet pointDon't fidget.
bullet pointMake sure your mobile phone is switched off before you enter the building.
bullet pointYou may be offered a drink. This could help you relax or you may end up spilling it. It's okay to say 'no thankyou' to the offer.
bullet pointDo not smoke during the interview or chew gum.
bullet pointAsk how and when you will be told of the result of the interview.
bullet pointAt the end of the interview make sure you thank interviewers for their time.

After the interview

bullet pointYou are normally offered a job by post or by phone. Think carefully whether or not you want to accept the job. If you verbally accept an offer confirm it in writing.
bullet pointIf you are not offered the job, think about what the employer's reasons are for not offering it to you. Try to get feedback from the employer so you can improve your performance at the next interview.
bullet pointTry not to be discouraged if you do not get the job. Remember practice always helps and may allow you to avoid making similar mistakes next time.
