"You Are Inspired" Apprentice Star Honours Somerset Students
She was one of Alan Sugar’s former star apprentices and this week she helped Somerset students celebrate success in the world of business with the message: “You Are Inspired!”
Michelle Dewberry, who won the TV contest in 2006, presented the prizes at the Somerset Education Business Awards 2008.
Nine schools and colleges were rewarded at the presentation evening that took place at the offices of WPA in Taunton on Tuesday (March 18).
The annual event is organised by the Somerset Education Business Partnership (EBP) to help promote even stronger links between the classroom and the workplace in Somerset.
Handing out the awards, Michelle Dewberry said: “"Listening to some of the stories tonight I can only say that what you have achieved is inspirational.”
Today Somerset EBP Managing Director John Crew said: “It was a terrific night which honoured those people – students, teachers and employers – who have done a great deal to bring the classroom and the world of work closer together.
“In many respects we lead the field here in Somerset and the awards evening demonstrated that.”
The winning schools, colleges and businesses, came from Yeovil, Frome, Taunton, Street, Bridgwater, Glastonbury and Minehead.
The prize for the overall winning project on the night went to the West Somerset Community College and Minehead tea and coffee importer D.J. Miles. Their project led to students forming the “Take Action Group” in an effort to achieve ”Gold Standard Fairtrade School” status for the college.
A partnership link was set up with a secondary school in Uganda and students from West Somerset have visited the school.
During Tuesday’s awards night individual students also picked up awards for their personal achievements and three teachers were recognised for their outstanding contribution during the year. There was also a special business award. All the winners received an engraved glass trophy.
John Crew added: “Each of the award winning projects demonstrates ways in which the combined enthusiasm and creativity of education and business can help young people develop the skills, qualities and attitudes to become the successful employees and employers of the future.”
