Faith

Do you ever ask yourself:

 bullet pointwho am I?
bullet pointwhy do bad things happen to good people?
bullet pointwhat happens when someone dies?
bullet pointis there something missing in my life?

If you do, then you are asking yourself important questions that people have been asking for thousands of years. Many people have found the answers to these questions in a faith, a spiritual or a religious belief.

There are many different faiths and religions. Many share the same core values. These include:

bullet pointcaring for communities and individuals
bullet pointrespect for each other and the world we live in
 bullet pointpersonal integrity
bullet pointwhat is right and wrong
 bullet pointwisdom
 bullet pointcompassion
 bullet pointjustice
 bullet pointpeace

These core values can help us to deal with, and understand, many of the problems facing the world, our communities and own our lives.

Our personal experiences of faith, spirituality and religion can differ. For example you may:

bullet pointlive in a community where religious beliefs are strongly held. Or you may live in one where they are hardly talked about
bullet pointfeel accepted for your beliefs. Or it may be that others don’t understand or accept your belief and even harass you as a result
bullet pointnot have a faith or religion or know anyone that does (but you might still be interested in life’s big questions)

Whatever your experience of faith, spirituality or religion it is important to remember that the questions you are asking yourself are important in how you choose to live your life and how others live theirs.

Right to a personal faith

You have certain rights concerning race, disability and equal opportunities. Have you ever considered your right to own or express a view of personal faith?

Faith is a personal matter, but it isn’t something to be afraid or ashamed of. It’s good to talk with others about your faith or belief system..

Would you would like to find out more about faith traditions, their relevance for your life and their impact in your local area? Here are some ideas you could try:

bullet pointlooking out for notice boards on local religious buildings and centres. Many faith groups have regular events to which an open invitation is extended to anyone who wants to find out more.
bullet pointchecking out school and college faith groups
bullet pointkeeping an open mind and chatting to others about what they believe. If someone has a strong faith position ask them about it. What do they believe? Why they believe it? Hw important it is to them?

Issues of faith

Are you facing an issue with your faith? Do you feel pressurised to follow a faith or religion? Are you finding it difficult to practise your faith?

If you have any concerns talk to someone you trust such as your Connexions PA, youth worker or teacher. You could also contact a helpline such as Connexions Direct - www.connexions-direct.com - 080 800 13 2 19 or Childline on 0800 1111
